| Purpose: As part of the WPS-FWC community relations goal to increase awareness of and encourage application to West Point, the Society recognizes and honors high school juniors who have distinguished themselves in a manner reflective of the ideals of West Point.
The Award: The Society presents a plaque to each high school to recognize
recipients of the General H. Norman Schwarzkopf Leadership Award. Individual
finalists also receive: - An invitation for the student and school
representative to be recognized at our Society's Founder's Day Banquet - A
copy of the book, In Search of Ethics by Leonard Marrella, PhD. - A
personalized trophy - and Florida West Coast Society certificate
SELECTION PROCESS
Eligibility: The high school principal, or designated representative, will select candidates based on qualities and performance in the following areas: Character and Attitude, Leadership Achievement, Athletic Ability, Academic Standing (Overall Grade Point Average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale), Essay on “Duty, Honor, Country” (300 words)
Selection Process: The Society selection committee meets annually to review candidates nominated by the schools and conduct personal interviews of the candidates, as required. The committee is composed of a voluntary Leadership Award Committee of at least 3 Society members.
Coverage: Each year we invite over 60 high schools to nominate a junior who demonstrates the character, attitude, leadership achievement, athletic ability, and academic standing reflective of values of West Point. We present only five awards across our membership area, which ranges along the coast from Pasco to Hillsborough and Sarasota counties. Volunteer Society Sponsors coordinate efforts closely with the West Point Admissions Group representatives, to include joint presentation during the school’s spring awards ceremony.
